Study areas

In the KliMoBay project, data from a total of 15 Bavarian peatland sites are being compiled and processed. The peatlands in Benediktbeuern, Karolinenfeld, Freisinger Moos and Weidfilz / Mooseurach are the central areas used to parameterise and evaluate models in the KliMoBay project

Benediktbeuern

Grassland under extensive use on a fen that belongs to Benediktbeuern Abbey. Rewetting of the study site is planned for the middle of 2021.
CO2, methane and nitrous oxide fluxes are measured using manual chambers. Water tables, climate variables, inflow and outflow as well as vegetation development are recorded too.

Drained grassland on a fen belonging to the Experimental Station Karolinenfeld of the Bavarian State Property ("Bayerische Staatsgüter"). Study site has been rewetted since the end of September 2020. Intensive management of grassland with 3 harvest and 3 fertilisation events per year.
CO2, methane and nitrous oxide fluxes are measured using manual chambers. Water tables, climate variables, outflow as well as vegetation development are recorded too.
Freisinger Moos

Big fen complex west of Freising, primarily used as grassland and arable land. Long-term measurements of CO2, methane and nitrous oxide for various types of land-use with automatic and manual chambers.
Within KliMoBay the Freisinger Moos is also a study area for parameterising a hydrological model. For this purpose water levels as well as inflow and outflow are monitored for a sub-area as well.

Bog, partly near-natural/restored and early succession after termination of managed forestry, respectively.
Greenhouse gas measurements in Mooseruach: Eddy covariance measurements at ICOS station Mooseurach (DE-Msr) with additional methane monitoring via manual chamber measurements. Additionally, climate variables and water tables have been monitored for over 10 years.
Weidfilz just to the north is a study area for parameterising a hydrological model. For this purpose water levels as well as inflow and outflow are monitored for a sub-area.
